NOTE post-trip posts from here forward!
As we drove down from Logan pass, the oil indicator started swinging wildly on Napster... Upon inspection the dipstick showed we were bone dry! Added 3.5 quarts at St. Mary before camping at Many Glacier. On 6/30 we left Glacier.
We checked next morning at the campground and added more oil. Original plan was to trek across Rt. 2 (basically northernmost road across entire US!).
Since it was Sunday, and since we were hesitant to trek out into sparsely populated areas without more understanding of the issue, we made a detour to Great Falls Mt.
Found an AWESOME mobile mechanic - Howarth and Sons... if you're ever in the area, highly recommend! We parked on the banks of the Missouri River. Mechanic's first comment: "You're literally in a van, down by the river!" The son didn't get the reference ;-(
They loved the van - they were super enthusiastic and didn't even charge us anything. Basically we just burn oil but it's nothing to worry that much about... were driving it hard up and over many mountain passes.
They recommended adding an oil stabilizer (this helped tremendously for remainder of the trip).
Great Falls was a cool city - we stopped for a celebratory beer at Annie's Tap House and also grabbed some hot chicken before we drove deep into the remote Montana plains out Rt. 200...
