We drove into the darkness along Montana Highway 200. Miles... and miles and miles and miles... of emptiness. It became a 2 lane road with occasional semis zooming past... then, unbeknownst to us, about 21 miles were being repaved. This was a rough go... alternating sides on bumpy gravel following a pilot car. Not super fun... averaging about 5-10 mph.
We stopped for the night at the Flowing Wells rest area... this was a really smart decision! It was super clean and empty aside from workers out there for the construction project (who didn't care about us at all).
A good place to rest and recharge, en route across this HUGE and overwhelmingly desolate stretch of north-western prairie.
